Three dimensional stress state of side-grooved DCB specimen was investigated on the basis of numerical results of elastic-plastic finite element analysis. An estimation formula based on the conventional compliance method was also derived for calculating the mode I energy release rate of the side-grooved specimen. The effects of side-groove on the stress distribution in the vicinity of the crack tip were clarified by the finite element results. The results also showed that the estimation formula was valid even for the specimen involving a small plastic region around the crack tip.
