This paper examines the mechanism of noise due to frictional vibration in wet friction systems. Wet friction systems are widely applied to automatic transmissions and heavy-duty machines. Occasionally, noise that generated by frictional vibration is produced during a shift change or a braking operation. Frictional vibration is given an explanation that it is a kind of self-excited vibration and caused by friction characteristics of a sliding surface where the friction force increases with decreasing sliding speed. In this experimental study, acceleration of input-shaft, separator plate that is opposite surface of friction material and friction force change dependent on sliding speed are measured in same time. From experimental results, vibration phenomena and its mechanism are considered.
