This paper deals with a method for analyzing flow characteristics using noise generated aerodynamically. Noise around airship models were measured inside a wind tunnel using a miniature microphone, because it is hard to measure the details of flow patterns from outside of the tunnel. We found that the sound pressure level (SPL) of the noise related to separation bubble and turbulence was large in a broad-band of frequencies higher than 500Hz. Comparing the results with those of boundary layer calculation and flow visualization with oil-film, it was found that they coincide with each other. It is therefore concluded that the method proposed here is a useful technique for identifying the flow patterns.
