A numerical analysis is performed to study an impact damage accumulation in composite laminates. An interface element is proposed to simulate the delamination propagation. The energy stored in the element per unit area is equal to the interlaminar fracture toughness. This element is incorporated into a commercially available finite element code and applied to simple three-dimensional problems to demonstrate the validity of the element. The solutions converge smoothly and agree well with the theoretical ones. The present method is applied to the damage accumulation problem of CFRP laminates.
