Abstract

In this research, the tool path generation method for efficient 5-axis controlled machining of tube-like shapes that uses a special cutting tool. In general, ball end mills are widely utilized for sculptured surface machining. However, its machining efficiency is insufficient, we have to take much time especially in case of tube-like shape machining. Therefore, we proposed an efficient machining method using a special cutting tool that can be fed to the tool axis direction. In order to generate the suitable cutter location data for the proposed machining, some functions were developed by utilizing configuration space (C-Space) techniques that were developed in previous researches such as avoidance of tool interference and sudden change in tool postures. The techniques were extended to cope with the special cutting tool, and the algorithm of tool interference avoidance was also devised to reduce the calculation time. As the result, the validity of our method was confirmed by cutting simulations with the interference-free cutter location data that was generated by the developed software.
