High speed grinding is known as an attractive machining technique for improving grinding efficiency. The aim of this study was to finish grind hardened steel to a mirror-like surface while attaining an acceptable level of practical grinding efficiency. Fundamental grinding experiments carried out on an ultra-high-speed cylindrical grinder clarified that surface roughness of below R_a 0.05μm was successfully attained with a coarse-grained CBN wheel following truncating dressing. Proper selection of dressing and grinding conditions can successfully result in a mirror-like surface unaccompanied by undesirable thermally affected layers in the ground subsurface. Elevation of the grinding wheel speed is effective in reducing grinding force, leading to improved grinding efficiency and reduced spark-out time.
