This paper describes electrical discharge machining (EDM) with a five degrees of freedom (5-DOF) controlled maglev local actuator. To machine microholes to a depth of more than the stroke of the maglev local actuator, a conventional EDM machine and the maglev local actuator were cooperatively controlled. To avoid abnormal electrical discharge, control of the jump and orbital motions by the maglev local actuator was evaluated. Experimental results showed that high speed and high precision re-positioning of the electrode by the maglev local actuator was effective for high speed EDM. Moreover, controlling the jump and orbital motions increased the machining speed.
