Microalgae are assumed to be a source of next generation biofuels, due to their excellent ability of lipid production.R&D in microalgal mass culture became popular and unpopular from time to time. The big R&D project,so-called biological CO_2 fixation, continued for 10 years during 1990's.A lot of achievements obtained in this project help the progress of recent R&D in algae-based biofuel production, however, there are still many problems remaining. For example, contamination by other microorganisms often happens and deteriorates the culture conditions, and improvement in oil productivity is an urgent and important issue. In order to commercialize the microalgae biofuels,we need to solve the problems at a steady pace.
