Recent year,fuel producing microalgae has been expected as a solution for the soaring price of the petroleum oil and the global warming which world are facing.We need stay on the ground that this trend is not supported by the technical innovation but just a enthusiasm caused by the volatile petroleum price fluctuation.Still technically,there is many challenge the industry has to address using this remarkable,but somewhat fastidious species.One of them is cultivation in open environment.It is critical to develop the low cost production method,for the lipid production by microalgae requires amount of production cost.Production in open environment is the one of expected solution for this.But still Lipid-producing microalgae are easily contaminated because of their slow growth against the other algae.Also improvement in growth is the other issue which has been discussed.For example Botryococcus braunii is well known to extract hydrocarbon.But at the same time,its extreme slow growth has been avoiding them from being used industrially.To face this,NML teamed up with the international engineering company IHI Corporation and the Kobe university startup;G>.We are developing the technology and aspiring commercial lipid production within appropriate fuel price range using a specific algal strain; which has an extremely high speed growth.
