The International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference (MSEC) was established in 2006 by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) with the mission to disseminate leading-edge manufacturing research and development information worldwide. The North American Manufacturing Research Conference (NAMRC) is sponsored by the North American Manufacturing Research Institution of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (NAMRI/SME). It was established in the early 1970s by the pioneering efforts of leading North American academics who were interested in creating a unique forum for the presentation and discussion of high-quality research papers on topics related to metalworking and manufacturing. In 2009, MSEC and NAMRC agreed to co-locate and co-organize their conferences to provide a larger conference to better serve the needs of the manufacturing research, engineering, and education communities. The co-located conference, MSEC/NAMRC, started in 2011. While many challenges remain, there is little doubt that this co-located conference is the leading-edge manufacturing conference-in both name and reality-in the United States. The author served as MSEC technical program vice-chair (in 2011) and chair (in 2012). This paper describes the trends in US manufacturing research and conferences as illustrated by the technical programs of MSEC.
