Visibility is a very important element to maintain walking speed in refuge from tunnel fire with smoke. The present study examined the effect of guidance light on walking speed in tunnel filled with smoke. The walking speed of subjects was measured in an actual tunnel filled with harmless white smoke. Four (0m, 0.5m, 1.0m and 1.5m) setting heights from the ground of the guiding lights were tested. Influence of obstacle was also considered by installing an obstacle in the experimental area. The walking speed was much decreased when lights were at 1.5m, in the section with an obstacle while significant differences due to the obstacle were not observed in other height conditions. The guidance lights are effective to maintain evacuees' walking speed compared with having a flashlight.
