The concept of reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS) is expected to present an effective approach to cope with dynamically changing situations around current industries. Theoretical formulation and evaluation of RMS have difficulties in numerous variations of its configurations. The author has proposed to introduce hexagonal bases (HexB) as universal and abstract elements for modeling RMS. This report first presents the modularity of manufacturing systems and then the basic concept of RMS design and planning using HexB which are categorized into five primary types. Lastly, an example is provided to show the reconfiguration result of a HexB layout so as to reduce total production time for a given jobs.
