A specification decision and performance evaluation framework for large-scale vertical axis wind turbine-generator systems was developed for the design of floating offshore vertical axis wind turbine-generator systems. In this framework, the system specifications are determined by given design parameters subject to the satisfaction of constraints including the strength and resonance at mechanical parts and the rated power output, and then the annual operation performances including generation performance and fatigue load variations are analyzed using a dynamic simulation model under turbulent wind fields. The developed framework was applied to the sensitivity analysis of the design parameters, i.e., solidity and aspect ratio, on the design feasibility in a 2-MW straight-wing vertical axis wind turbine-generator system and on the annual operation performances.
