Abstract

Although a drag-type vertical axis wind turbine has the advantage that it can be used regardless of the wind direction, the power generation efficiency is lower than that of a horizontal axis wind turbine. This was partly due to the use of drag instead of lift, but also existence of a range in which resistance was applied from wind while the impeller makes one revolution. Therefore, although the advantage that could be used regardless of the wind direction disappeared, it was investigated how much efficiency was improved by installing a wall in that range so as not to receive the resistance torque from the wind. As a result, double efficiency was achieved. A mechanism that rotates the wall to the proper position according to the wind direction was tested and confirmed that it works without any problems.
