The Wagasennin tunnel is a highway tunnel on the Akita Expressway and was newly opened in July 1997. Now, the ventilation system of this tunnel has issues caused by deterioration, for example, frequent problem, overrun and parts missing. In this report, we study on renewal and optimization of ventilation method. Specifically, we compare feedback control (FB) with model based Predictive Ventilation Control (MPVC). First, we simulate each system in peak season with the most traffic and compare the results for visibility Index (VI), carbon monoxide (CO) and electric power. Second, we study the effect of polluted air from the next tunnel. As a result, MPVC reduced electric power consumption by 54% compared to FB and the value of VI and CO were almost same. On the other hand, the effect for polluted air from the next tunnel was small. From the result, MPVC reduces electric power by predicting driving. But, this case not consider winter. 80% at ventilation driving time for this tunnel are concentrated for the winter season by the seasonal temperature differences between inside and outside tunnels. We will address these issues in the future.
