In 1964, Toyota Motor Co. introduced the company's first automatic forging press from Erie, USA. However, the automatic forging of connecting rod that Toyota intended was extremely difficult, and it was put into practical use after a period of one year. While many records of practical use have been kept, it is not known that a serious failure occurred shortly thereafter.
This time, we carried out a disassembly survey of the Erie 2500T forging press machine, and based on the technical report at that time, we investigated the failure case of the pressing machine as a failure case in the early days of automatic forging.
As a result, it became clear that the problem was a mismatch between the design concept of the press machine and the usage method, and the root of the problem was lack of knowledge of automatic forging.
