Abstract

A study of roles and contributions of human, society and technology for sustainable development of regional industries is presented here. In the same decade of the Industrial Revolution of Great Britain, increase of agricultural productivity caused developments of textile industries in many rural areas of Japan. Silk manufacturing industry was developed in Okaya city, a small village in one of the rural areas at that time. The silk industry suffered catastrophic damage during the World War II. However, machinery industry was developed just after the War in Okaya city. The two advancements in Okaya city have the commonality regarding the cross-interaction among human, society and technology. This commonality should indicate some guiding principles for future activities for advancements in local industries.
