An ER suspension filled rotary damper having three cylindrical electrodes has been developed to be applied various mechanical mechanisms with rotating motions as a damping element. The rotating axis of the ER damper is used to be directly connected to the axis of the rotating mechanisms to apply damping torque. Three control strategies are applied to the developed ER rotary damper : (a) constant voltage control, (b) feedback control of rotating speed, (c) feedback control of torque proportional to the rotating speed. For each control strategy, steady and hysteresis characteristics of torque vs. rotating speed have been investigated experimentally. The damping properties and features for each control strategies are discussed.
