Nanotribological properties of head disk interface (HDI) are necessary to clarify to achieve high recording density of hard disk drives. In fiber wobbling method, using an optical fiber as a probe has enabled us to measure small shear force (on the order of 1 nN) at a high shear rate. Although the method has clarified some of the characteristic nanotribological properties, higher force sensitivity is required for more detailed investigation. Shear force acting on the probe end is obtained by measuring the deflection of the probe. In order to detect shear force of sub-nano-newton order, deflection measurement requires high sensitivity below sub-nano-meter. In this study, the optical system for the deflection measurement was optimized to obtain sub-nano-newton detection limit.
