Abstract

Authors investigated the ruins of Zippori of the third century AD. Zippori is located in north-northwest 6.7km of Nazareth and is the ancient Roman Empire city where the Byzantine culture was prosperous. Wheel ruts were discovered at the stone pavement of a main street "Cardo" of the north and south. As a result of having measured a gauge of wheel ruts, value of 1,400mm at two places and 1,200mm at one place was obtained. The measured value is nearly dose to the international standard gauge of current railway of 1435mm. A gauge of a chariot of the Roman Empire Era reaffirmed that it was the origin of a railway gauge of the present day.
