Abstract
In this report a mechanical model of compression of paper is proposed and an evaluation method for compression properties by this model is described. Based on the observation of compression test by step loading, compression of paper can be represented as the 6-element viscoelastic model which consists of a 3-element viscoelastic solid model for elastic deformation and an irreversible 3-element viscoelastic solid model accounting for the time-dependent properties of plastic deformation. The viscoelastic parameters which represent the compression properties of paper are determined by fitting the model equation efficiently to the experimental data. Furthermore, the compression behavior of newsprint is evaluated and considered.
