Filler ropes of IWRC (Independent Wire Rope Core) are used as derricking and hoisting ropes in mobile cranes in order to prevent wire ropes from flattening. Although the load which affects a wire rope in mobile cranes is extremely changed, a loading history of the wire rope is not considered and the damage of a wire rope is evaluated by the number of breaking wire on the surface. In this study, S type bending fatigue tests under the different wire rope tensions were carried out in order to investigate the effect of wire rope tension on fatigue damage in IWRC wire ropes. Fatigue tests were finished when a visible breaking wire was observed and then the number of internal breaking wire was evaluated. The number of internal breaking wire varied in inversely proportion to wire rope tension, even though the fatigue lives of wire ropes decreased in proportion to rope tension.
