A tension-compression fatigue test was performed on a micro-sized copper single crystal specimen of which [001] direction is parallel to the loading axis. Although multiple slip systems were active in the specimen, cyclic work-hardening was not shown. On the specimen surfaces, protrusions were grown and its height was increased with increasing number of cycles. Detailed observation of the surfaces after the test pointed out that columnar extrusions/intrusions are formed owing to the activity of cross-slip. In addition, the formation stress of the extrusions/intrusions was much lower than that of bulk counterpart. The reason why the specimen shows characteristic fatigue behavior is that dislocations inside the micro-sized specimen are easily escaped from the surfaces.
