Electrical Discharge Machining (EDMing) was developed in USSR about 1943, and its history is rather new compared to other machine tools. The characteristic of EDMing is known as one of non-contact metal removal methods using electrical discharge energy and is widely used for the tool & dies manufacturing of hardened metals or fine profiles. This paper describes the technical evolution of EDMing, and its transition of the role for toot & die manufacturing by three stages. Although it is known that high speed milling method is recently replacing EDMing, the comparison shows the future applications for better tool & die manufacturing collaborating with high speed machining.
