Recently our laboratory has been developing a microsphere diameter measurement method using optical resonances. Thin optical fibers in diameters around 1 micrometer are used for light coupling. In order to increase the measurement accuracy it is necessary to know the exact diameters of the optical fibers. Therefore we proposed an in-process diameter method for micrometer-ordered optical fibers based on light scattering under standing wave illumination. In this report, through theoretical analysis based on Mie theory, it was confirmed that the far-field light distribution changes with different diameters. Then numerical simulations with finite element method were performed, and the numerical results agrees well with theoretical results, which also proves the feasibility of the proposed fundamental measurement principle.
