Fretting fatigue life showed a minimum and a maximum with increasing contact pressure in a high strength steel. In order to investigate the effect of contact pressure on crack initiation life in fretting fatigue, two-stage fretting fatigue tests were carried out. The crack initiation was accelerated by the fretting action. The number of fretting cycles required to cause a crack that was able to grow.without fretting was affected by the contact pressure, and the change in crack initiation life corresponded approximately to that in fretting fatigue life.
