The present paper describes an investigation about neurite formation of rat phenochromocytoma (PC12) cells on micro-structured SiO_2 particles The width and thickness of micro-structured particles are 20 - 40 (jm and a few micro-meters, respectively An incubation makes most of the cells selectively adhered on the region of micro-structured particles Some adhered cells form neurites on the particles by an addition of nerve growth factor (NGF) The neurites are autonomously aligned along the direction of micro-structured particles, while they isotropically grow on a flat dish
