The running performances of transmission gears, such as tooth contact pattern, strength and gear noise, are largely depended upon the shape of tooth flank error, which is usually controlled by several profile and lead errors measurement. Based on such measurement, however, it is difficult to evaluate the whole tooth flank shape, especially, the most important relative shape of tooth flank for the gear pair. A visual evaluation system of the tooth flank shape has been developed based upon a new method by measuring the whole tooth flank shape. The whole tooth flank shape for single gear, or the relative tooth flank shape for gear pair, is visualized by a simple contour graph for easy understanding. As practical applications, the pitting strength and gear noise of several transmissions are improved by predicting the influences on the tooth contact pattern, stress and transmission error.
