Abstract
The effective surgical treatment of severely curved scoliosis is achieved through fixation of implants to modify the spine curve and to apply the suitable corrective forces. In such corrected spine structure with implant rods, load conditions of the spine after treatment could be estimated by detecting the deformation of the rods. In this study, in vivo forces estimation method for corrected spine was proposed using the measurements of rod geometry change. The forces applied at the fixation screws at vertebra were calculated using finite element method. Force estimation in actual scoliosis treatment was conducted from the rod geometry data before and after the surgical treatment. Forces distribution of a rod was analyzed as elastic-linear plastic material.
