The elderly decrease cognitive and physical functions because of the aging. In order to support their healthy and safe living, a system which can monitor their daily living is needed. This paper proposes a handrail-shaped sensor as a new type sensing system for elderly daily living. The handrail-shaped sensor allows us to detect serious change of daily living using information on moving speed and degree of dependence of the handrail. First, to evaluate of the effectiveness, the authors evaluated accuracy of position estimation in our laboratory. Secondly, the authors installed the handrail sensor in the true home environment where an 88-year-old woman lives to conduct a field test. Finally, the developed system allows us to calculate their loads and estimate positioning of the elderly in daily living environment. The experimental results show that the system works in a real home environment.
