In snow area we have so many lethal accidents during roof snow removals. To reduce such risky accidents, automation process is required but for example, snow melting system by heating needs high energy consumption, the cost for operation is hardly acceptable. We designed a novel telescopic mechanism which comprises aggregated convex tapes as an arm. The convex arm has unique characters - e.g. wide telescopic range and toughness against mechanical stresses. In this study, we designed high power telescopic mechanism for the roof snow removal. The robot “Setsu-ichi” which equips the convex arm could successfully achieve the snow removal task even for heavy wet snow layer on a roof and in the future, with improvements of the telescopic mechanism, we can realize a low-cost practical snow removal system.
