This paper proposes the fall prevention system for electric wheelchairs using the Kinect V2 sensor of Microsoft Corporation which is an image distance sensor. A detecting performance of the proposed fall prevention system is evaluated by experimental results. For fall detection, an electric wheelchair with the Kinect V2 sensor has need of the information on the road surface in the traveling direction in real time. The Kinect V2 sensor loaded on the electric wheelchair, however, has unfavorable conditions to measure the distance correctly, for example, the use of outdoors, and use during travel with a vibration itself. The Kinect V2 sensor evaluates at the unfavorable condition in the first place. And then, the proposed fall prevention system for the electric wheelchair evaluates the detection of a difference in level on the road surface.
