This study aims to develop sound devices using wire-type SMA actuators. SMA wires are a kind of artificial muscle actuators that can expand and contract in the longitudinal direction, and have superior maximum force per weight compared to other actuators. However, as SMA wires are easily affected by ambient temperatures, it is difficult to achieve a fast response using conventional methods such as simple energization. In addition to common input waveforms such as impulse wave and sine wave, random pattern waveform is applied to SMA wire and the behavior is analyzed. We try to improve the response by optimizing the input waveform of SMA wire in order to realize large and low-distortion sound generation.
