It is known to all that derailment is the vital problem in railway transportation. As the increase of vehicle speed, the possibility of derailment due to the lateral impact between the wheel flange and the rail increases. An impact model for the impact between the wheel and rail together with an accurate kinematic analysis are presented in order to shed some light on the wheel lift derailment of high-speed vehicles.
