For the safety of train operations, it is very important to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of railway vehicles under strong cross winds. We have studied to simulate flows around a train in natural winds. In this first report, we show numerical computations for generating inflow turbulence. We generated two types of inflow data. One is a turbulent boundary layer on a smooth surface and the other is that on a rough surface. We also conducted wind tunnel experiments to verify the computational results. While the computed result on the smooth surface shows good agreement with the experimental data, the turbulent intensity on the rough surface by the numerical computation is less than that of the experimental result.
