The purpose of this study is to propose shape and arrangement of tread blocks that reduce traveling resistance on sandy soil. A Reverse U-shaped tread blocks was tested to generate traction force and reduce sinkage by collecting sand between the blocks and making them denser to increase shear strength. This effect was defined as the “Holding sand effect”. First, we conducted a single wheel driving test with rotation speed control to verify the holding sand effect. As a result, at lower speed, the Reverse U-Shaped tread blocks traveled well due to the holding sand effect. Next, based on the results, the Reverse U-Shaped tread blocks was modified and the traction force and sinkage were measured by single wheel driving test with controlled slip ratio. The modified Reverse U-Shaped tread blocks showed higher traveling performance than the unmodified tread blocks with a slip ratio of 30% or more.
