In this study, we developed the method to estimate the wheel load unbalance ratio of container cars using images taken by line scan cameras and a laser Doppler velocimeter placed on the ground. And we conducted experiments using a railway container car loaded with deadweights to verify the accuracy of the method. First, we estimated the lengths of the bolster dampers on the left and right sides of the bogie from the vehicle image using template matching. We then used the estimated bolster damper lengths to calculate the wheel loads using a rigid bogie model. In addition, the correction load was added to the formula for calculating wheel load to correct for uneven wheel load of the empty vehicle. As results of the experiment, the maximum absolute errors between the estimated and measured wheel load unbalance ratio were 3.80 [%pt] in the outgoing direction and 7.00 [%pt] in the incoming direction. It was also shown that the correction load improved the estimation accuracy of wheel load and wheel load unbalance ratio.
