Hunting oscillation, a type of self-excited oscillation, is unfavorable due to its negative effect on both running stability and ride comfort. It is generated by creepage force, which is non-conservative and nonlinear. The nonlinearity of creepage force is commonly known as a saturation characteristic. However, in addition to this saturation characteristic, nonlinearity stemming from wheel profile is also thought to contribute to the system's overall nonlinearity. Therefore, the authors conducted hunting motion tests with different wheel profiles and found that the mode of the hunting oscillation varied depending on the wheel profile. These modes in question arose from subcritical and supercritical Hopf bifurcations. This paper summarizes the results of the hunting motion tests and the periodic solutions calculated using a shooting method. And it also discusses the relationship between the mode of hunting oscillation and the nonlinearity stemming from the wheel profile.
