Paris agreement was accepted by the participating nations of COP21 on December 2015. In order to conform to the agreement, biomass has been required to become a substitute for fossil fuel. The reason is that biomass can reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and keep the rise in the average temperature of the world within 2 degrees C for after the industrial revolution. We developed a biomass solid fuel, called as Biocoke (BIC), to alternate coal coke in melting furnace, where a compressive strength is required for ensuring air and liquid permeability. There have been few studies about the effect of the relation between crushed sizes of material and scales of BIC on the compressive strength. This study investigates wether the crushed sizes of Japanese cedar affect the apparent density and compressive strength of different diameter of BIC. Also, Johanson type pellets (JPE) were examined to be compared with BIC. The results indicated that JPE and BIC had a negative proportional relation between crushed size and apparent density, not depending on those diameters. Further, regarding the relation between the crushed sizes and the compressive strength, JPE had the minimum value at 212~ 500 μm for all diameters and BIC had the maximum value at 2000~ 5000 μm for the diameters of 30 mm and 48 mm. In conclusion, as for the apparent density and the compressive strength, BIC had the optimum crushed size for the diameter although JPE did not depend on the crushed size or the diameter.
