Attitudes about sexual life of middle-aged and older women : first report

Abstract
Two handred ninety-two initial visitors to an Ob/Gyn out-patient clinic in a certain hospital in Tokyo were surveyed about their sex life by questionnaire from December 1997 through March 1998. The mean age of the respondents was 40 years. Eighty-nine percent were married, 73% were working outside the home and 17% were post-menopaused. Fifty percent stated that they were very happy with their husbands. About 40% answered that they could talk freely about sex with their husbands. Only 6% were concerned about sexual transmitted direases (STD) and women who were younger than 35 years old were significantly more worried about STD than older. As far as the meaning of the sex the women experienced, about 60% answered that it deepened on mutual trust and/or love. Fourteen percent had negative attitude about the sexual desire of the aged. This negative attitude appeared frequently among ander 35 years old and over 55 years old.
