It is now a well-known fact that premenstrual syndrome (P.M.S), the regular recurrence of various symptoms in the premenstrual phase, is a very frequently occurring phenomenon, and can take a variety of different forms. It has also been established that the measurement and reporting of symptoms in the form of prospective measures and daily ratings are useful in increasing the woman's awareness of her symptoms and arriving at an accurate diagnosis. This paper describes how, with reference to the Utah PMS Calendar II, the authors developed in this country, the "PMS Memory", also a prospective measure and daily self-rating method for measuring PMS. The authors examined physical, emotional and social symptoms, a list of which can be found in the appendix, and have also included an aid to assessing the frequency and degree of the symptoms in a clear and simple manner. The chart has been organized so that basal body temperatures, the menstrual cycle, menstrual blood loss, body weight, drugs that have been taken and any other items that may be necessary for diagnosis can be recorded on the same page in order to simplify the process not only for the doctor, but also for the patient. In this paper the authors intend to show how the above measure proved in actual practice to be a useful aid.

The purpose of this study is to clarify what kinds of psychological symptoms Japanese women experience during menopause and to clarify what is its characteristic and to clarify the main cause and influences on psychological symptoms. Methods : 1,502 subjects (45〜65years) were randomly extracted from the women residing in Nagano and Osaka. They agreed to cooperate our study. They completed a self-assessment questionnaires which are structured demographic data, physical factor, psychosocial factor and menopausal symptoms. Result : 45 symptoms were factor analyzed using principal component analysis with varimax rotation, thirty-seven of 45 symptoms loaded on six factors together accounting for 42.9% of the variance. The first factor with the largest percent of variance accounted for (16.7%) was "Mood swing". The first factor was not statistically significant correlation with other factors. To examine the relationships between psychological symptom, physical factor, psychological factor and sociocultual factor, Multi-regression analysis was carried out. "Mood swing" was strongly influenced by stress and one's health condition. Conclusion: The stressful life context was most influential in accounting for psychological symptoms which menopausal women experienced. These results support the need for menopausal women to access mental health care.
