In neutral and slightly alkaline aquatic habitats, plants incorporate HCO3- and use CO2 for photosynthesis. Resultant OH- is extruded to the cell exterior. Characean cells extrude OH - at limited sites of the cell surface, forming alkaline bands. Although chloroplasts are anchored to the gel ectoplasm in whole part of cells, OH - is carried by cytoplasmic streaming to the specialized sites for alkaline band formation. Lucas and Dainty (1977) studies the effect of cytochalasin B on alkaline band formation. However,
cytochalasin B had been reported to inhibit not only function of actin filaments but also membrane transport. In the present study, we analyzed the effect of other cytochalasins, which do not affect the membrane transport.
