Glutamate carboxypeptidaseII is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of the neuropeptide N-acetylglutamate to N-acetylaspartate and glutamate in animal. Inhibitors of GCPII provide neuroprotection in a variety of animal models of central nervous system disorders. However, the function of GCPII in plant is poorly understood. Arabidopsis amp1 mutant exhibits a higher endogenous cytokinin level than the wild type, and shows altered embryonic and vegetative development. Recently Chaudhury et al. demonstrated that AMP1 encodes GCPII with significant similarity to those that cleave small signaling peptides and similar molecules in other eukaryotes. To examine the biological functions of AMP1 in plants, we constructed transgenic Arabidopsis. AMP1 overexpression induces cytokinin sensitivity in transgenic plants. The root length of transgenic plants is shorter than that of the wild type.
