Recent advances of genomics continue to yield a vast information on the generality as well as the diversity of organisms. Along with the accumulating genomic data, the proteomics, which depends on genomics on one hand, is now giving a novel approach to analyze the function of expressed proteins and the functional linkage between them. Through the proteomic analysis of photosystem II complexes purified from Synechocystis 6803 HT3 using optimized electrophoresis, 21 distinct proteins were detected in the region below 20 kDa. Some of those were known as PS II components, but detected for the first time in cyanobacterial PS II. Besides such known small subunits, 4 novel proteins were also detected. One of them was found to be homologous to plant PsbQ, and furthermore, homologous genes were found in all other analyzed cyanobacterial genomes. The effective dialogue between genomics and proteomics will be discussed.
