Technology licenses from Japanese national university corporations have not balanced with its patent application activity. Patents should be strong enough for its right to facilitate technology transfer from academia to industry. This paper compares the strength of a right in pharmaceuticals patents applied by national university corporations and pharmaceuticals companies. Patents were categorized by its claims and the contents were analyzed by various factors. We found that there are less substance patents from university than companies. Also the number of compounds in example of university patents is smaller than that of companies. These data shows that pharmaceuticals patents from university might not be attractive enough to induce the interest of companies. Strategic management would be needed to improve the value of patents from national university corporations.
