Abstract
In Japan, the basic research has historically been carried out primarily in universities and national laboratories. But recently, even firms are touting the importance of basic research and have come to make significant investments in basic research of their own accord. The purpose of this paper is to review the principal policies in Japan used to promote basic research over the past ten years to gain insights about policies that should be adopted in the future.
