Bundles of cedar twigs were displayed at the storefront of sake breweries as the shop's signboard. There were also many sake brewers that suspended bundles of voided pawn tickets, although this was also known to be the signboard of pawnshops. Wealthy people became sake brewers because of the considerable capital funding that sake brewery required and they operated pawnshops besides. Clothing was placed out on display in front of sake shops and, in this study, I point out the strong possibility that this clothing was actually unredeemed pawn pledges and that it was placed there to be sold.
