This study focused on the role of the smock and the people who wearing smock in Punch, or, the London charivari in the Victorian age. The following results were made; (1) The largest number of the smock illustration appeared in 1850's. (2) The shape and the ornament of smock changed with the times. (3) The theme of illustration was divided into three parts; the life of people, the rural scene, the political issue. (4) The people in smock symbolised not only the rustic but also the English labourer, the English agriculture and England. (5) Smock was worn by the elder people with the caption as 'veteran' on the latter term.
