The chronological tranition of Japanese pedestrian bridges after the start of motorizaition in 1950s was first reviewd. Although the earlier steel overpasses of standard design type were often accused of both theier function and appearance, design of Japanese pedestrian bridges has been much inproved afterwards. In recent years, a number of pedestrian bridges have been designed with a conscious effort to take the surrounding environment into account. It was found, however, from the survey and case studies in this study that the existing bridges are not necessarily harmonious with the surrounding environment. The compatibility, function and comfort would be basic key wards in the future pedestrian bridges.
