On the Universal Exhibition at Vienna in 1873 Japanese exhibits mainly consisting of handicrafts were favorably received. Through the participation in the Exhibition, the Japanese word "美術"(Bijutsu)" was coined and the new concept called 'fine arts applied to industry' , which had been diffused throughout Europe in the second half of the 19th century, was introduced into Japan. However at the time in Japan the concept was uncertain as well as the meaning of the new word"美術" because of the undeveloped mechanization of domestic industries and the export promotion measures of traditional handicrafts.
